One-Time Purchase vs. Subscription: How to Evaluate an AI Tool's Price

Matthew Vass · September 2026 · 5 min read

Subscription fatigue is real, and there are more monthly software charges on the average card statement than most people could list from memory. That doesn't make every subscription a rip-off, and it doesn't make every one-time price a bargain. The pricing model isn't the thing worth judging. What's underneath it is.

When a subscription actually makes sense

A recurring fee is a fair match for a tool when the vendor is carrying a recurring cost to keep serving you: hosting your data, running compute on their own servers, pulling in live information that changes daily, or supporting a growing team of users on shared infrastructure. If the thing you're paying for keeps needing upkeep after you've bought it, a subscription is just cost recovery, not a trick.

When a one-time purchase makes more sense

Plenty of tools aren't like that. Some products are really a fixed body of judgement or logic, a methodology, a writing style, a calculation template, packaged so you can use it. Once you have it, having it again next month doesn't cost the vendor anything new. If they're still charging you every month for something that isn't costing them more to keep running for you specifically, the pricing is about extraction, not about matching cost to value.

A quick framework

AskWhat the answer tells you
Does this run on infrastructure the vendor pays for continuously, or on infrastructure I already pay for (my own account, my own machine)?Their cost, ongoing → subscription is fair. My cost, one-off → less reason for a recurring fee.
If I stopped paying tomorrow, would the thing I bought stop working, or just stop getting updates?Stops working entirely → it depended on their live service. Keeps working, just frozen → you already owned the value.
Am I paying for new value each month, or renting access to something that isn't changing? New data, new compute, new features tied to the fee → fair. Same thing, same price, forever → worth questioning.

Before agreeing to a recurring fee, it's worth asking the vendor directly:

Where skillfAIre lands on this

rAInmaker runs inside your own Claude account, not on servers we host, so there's no ongoing infrastructure cost on our side that scales with how many people buy it. That's the whole reason the Solo tier is a one-time £59 rather than a monthly charge, and the Lite tier is free outright. For comparison, enterprise sales coaching platforms with hosted dashboards and live team analytics commonly run in the region of $15,000 a year per team, and that pricing makes sense for what they're built to do. It's a different category of product, built on infrastructure they do have to keep running. Ours doesn't need that, so it isn't priced as if it did.
